Our Lactose Free Story

For more than 30 years, I’ve been navigating life with lactose intolerance. Along the way, I’ve learned countless tips, tricks, product swaps, and survival strategies that have made lactose-free living a whole lot easier.
Now, I’m passing those lessons on to my daughter Logan and to you.
Whether you’re newly lactose intolerant, raising a lactose-intolerant child, or simply looking for better lactose-free products and recipes, we hope our story helps you feel a little less alone on this journey.
Meet Logan, THE LACTO NEWBIE

Logan is now 12 years old, but her lactose-free journey started much earlier than mine.
When she was almost 2 years old, dairy suddenly stopped agreeing with her. And when I say stopped agreeing, I mean daily diaper blowouts. The glamorous side of parenting, right?
We removed dairy from her diet completely and hoped for the best.
Determined to keep her from ending up with the same struggles I’d experienced, I slowly began reintroducing dairy about 10 months later. We started with small amounts of butter in baked goods and lower-lactose cheeses.
To my surprise, it worked.
Eventually she was eating everything again including milk, with no issues at all.
Then, about seven years later, everything changed. Almost overnight, she was hit hard with severe stomach pain. We’re talking curled-up-in-the-fetal-position, tears-streaming-down-her-face kind of pain. As awful as it was to watch, I immediately recognized the symptoms – I had lived them myself.
After testing and discussions with her healthcare providers, lactose intolerance appeared to be the culprit once again. So we removed dairy from her diet for a second time.
Today, Logan continues to live a lactose-free lifestyle. I am also convinced that there is some correlation with hormones and lactose (more on that later, but if you feel the same way – shoot me an email!)
Anyways, unlike me, she refuses to take lactase pills, so she avoids lactose entirely. While we’ve found our rhythm at home, the real challenges often happen outside the house:
- Birthday parties
- Team snacks
- School events
- Restaurants
- Sleepovers
- Vacations
The silver lining? She’s become an expert label reader and a confident self-advocate. She knows how to ask questions, check ingredients, and explain her dietary needs to servers and friends.
Honestly, she’s pretty impressive.
And she’s one of the biggest reasons we created Lactose Free Me, to help other families navigate these same challenges with a little more confidence and a lot less guesswork.

MEET CAMERON, your friendly lactose sherpa

I’m Cameron, mom to two active kids, lifelong marketing professional, and self-proclaimed Lactose Sherpa. I’ve been lactose intolerant for more than 30 years, but I wasn’t always.
Back in junior high, I went from happily eating ice cream and Oreos after school every day to suddenly experiencing severe stomach pain and digestive issues.
Every morning before school was miserable.
I had no idea what was happening, and like many introverted middle schoolers, I told absolutely no one.
Instead, I secretly started drinking Pepto-Bismol every morning and hoping for the best.
As the weeks passed, I became afraid to eat almost anything.
Eventually, my mom noticed the growing collection of empty Pepto bottles and the fact that I was losing too much weight for a growing tween.
That’s when I finally confessed what had been going on.
One doctor’s appointment, one very awkward conversation, and one even more awkward stool sample later, I heard the words that would change my relationship with food forever:
“You’re lactose intolerant.”
At the time, it felt like a life sentence. But I have actually found some positives to it after all these years.
How Far Lactose-Free Living Has Come. Thankfully, things look very different today.
When I was first diagnosed, lactose-free options were extremely limited.
Many dairy alternatives tasted like cardboard. Soy products dominated the shelves, and finding a decent substitute often felt impossible.
Today, the food industry has completely transformed.
We now have incredible products made from:
- Oats
- Almonds
- Cashews
- Coconut
- Avocado
- Peas
- And many other plant-based ingredients
Some of them are genuinely delicious.
Others? Well… we’ll happily save you from wasting your money.
That’s one of the reasons we created this website.
